Every Armenian knows about the conflict between the self determined Nagorono-Karabakh republic and the Republic of Azerbaijan. It all starts in the early 1980’s when the in the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in southwestern Azerbaijan, starts a  secessionist movement. The he enclaves parliament had voted in favor of uniting itself with Armenia. The majority of Nagorno Karabakhian Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) were in favor of secession and unification with the Republic of Armenia. The ethnic clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani  population in NKAO begun right after the decision of NKAO parliament to unify with Republic of Armenia. Those clashes later on escalated to the full-scale war.

Since 1994 the ceasefire treaty has been signed among the both sides of a conflict and the it stands till today. But since 1994 the ceasefire has been violated for many times. The ceasefire stands till the march 2008 during the Armenian election protests(Լեվոնականների միտինգ). The both sides claimed that the other one had violated the ceasefire. The Azeri forces claim that 12 Armenian soldiers were killed and that they had lost 4. The Armenians claim that no Armenian soldier were killed and that 8 Azeri soldiers were killed. After the clashes the UN’s general assembly by a recorded vote of 39 in favour to 7 against adopted resolution according to which the all Armenian forces must be withdrawn from the “Occupied territories of Azerbaijan”. The resolution was opposed by all three members of the OSCE Minsk Group.

Should be admitted that Nagorno Karabakh Republic has its own constitution and government which is considered as an unrecognized presidential republic with its president, prime minister and chairman of a parliament.

The border clashes has been going on and on since 1994 ceasefire treaty. How this conflict would end. What would be the compromise between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh Republic. The Armenia has finalized its accession to the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union,  how that may affect the Nagorno Karabakh issue. Many questions stays unanswered.

Why this type of Article is interesting. First of all it tackles one of the most important aspect of the person daily life, the security. Further if I could have interviewed different political experts about the current situation between the NKR and Azerbaijan, this topic would be great for a soft news feature analyzing the current situation and what to accept from it. Finally by writing this post despite being Armenian by nationality I tried to be as objective as possible.
