Last Wednesday, on December 4th, the American University of Armenia’s Armenian Language and Culture section A class hosted a talk on Turkish identity.
The guest was Meltem Naz Kaşo, a former Today’s Zaman daily reporter and a research fellow participating in a Turkey-Armenia Fellowship Scheme established by the Hrant Dink Foundation. Students discussed many aspects of the Turkish-Armenian relationship with Meltem, and even brought up the topic of Genocide.
The news is not the talk itself, it’s the aftermath of the talk. On Thursday December 5th, Today’s Zaman posted an article regarding this event. However, the information written in the article were twisted and not 100% true. The journalist had misquoted people such as Meghety Karjikian; a sophomore Lebanese-Armenian student.
This act annoyed the students, and it raised a serious question in my mind on whether this meeting should have been held in the first place, taking into consideration that AUA was a target of some debate and criticism on social media lately, and this act will only worsen the reputation of AUA, if people know about what had taken place.
